- Amount – using more or longer than intended
- Obligations – substance use prevents fulfillment of important obligations at work, school, or home
- Social – continuing substance use despite harm caused to relationships
- Cravings – feeling strong desires or urges to use the substance
- Control – unable to stop or cut back
- Activities – choosing substance use over important social or work activities
- Harm – consistent substance use despite knowing it is causing physical or psychological problems
- Tolerance – need increasing amounts of substance to get desired effect or achieve a diminished effect with same amount of substance
- Hazard – substance use in physically dangerous circumstances such as driving under the influence
- Withdrawal – experiencing withdrawal symptoms as a characteristic syndrome or when using the substance to avoid withdrawal
- Time – obtaining the substance takes significant time
Meeting 2-3 criteria may indicate mild disorder. Meeting 4-5 criteria may indicate a moderate disorder. Meeting 6 or more criteria may indicate a severe disorder.
